New research by Bloomberg New Energy Finance suggests that by the end of the 2020s, electric vehicles will become a more economic option than gasoline or diesel cars in most countries. Further out, the study forecasts that sales of electric vehicles will hit 41 million by 2040, representing 35 percent of new light duty vehicle sales. That’s 90 times the sale of EVs in 2015.
Accompanying that growth, obviously, will be a corresponding increase in the number of vehicle charging stations. The global EV Charger market is forecast to grow from more than 1 million units in 2014 to more than 12.7 million units in 2020, according to a new EV Charging Infrastructure report by IHS Inc.
Today, many of those charging stations consist of a box and plug mounted to a bland concrete wall. Because it typically takes those stations 30 minutes or more to charge an EV, though, an opportunity exists for advertisers to provide messaging to EV vehicle owners while they wait to top off the batteries. And Digital Signage will be the perfect medium to accomplish that task.
To get a sense of the opportunity for Digital Signage combined with charging stations, one only needs to look at the proliferation of gas station TV networks. And that’s just in a situation where consumers are viewing the advertising for a few minutes.

Some stations offer a pay-as-you-go model, where customers pay to top off their batteries, while others provide it as a free service, with advertisers picking up the tab.
